This one is a 13" × 3.5" maple piccolo snare; everything I put into this drum is geared toward giving it that classic piccolo crack: thick shell, heavy hoops, and dense brass tube lugs.
What's the story with this drum? This was one of my recurring experiments—my take on the classic 13" piccolo snare, with nice heavy hoops and a unique finish. It's also one of the first drums I did with this matte/speckled-gloss finish.
What makes this a "Prototype" drum?
The DW Mini-Mag throw-off is slightly oversized for a 3.5" deep shell. The drum plays and sounds great, but at very high tuning, the rims can just touch the edges of the throw-off. It's not a functional problem at normal tuning, but it's something I wouldn't repeat on another 3.5" shell—I'd use a minimum 4" depth with this throw-off.
