Workbench Series 14" × 2.25" Maple/Gum Pancake Snare

This drum has found a new home, but it remains part of the Kline Drums story. This is a drum I previously built and sold — preserved here as part of the archive of instruments that have come out of my workshop.

This one is a 2.25" × 14" pancake snare—a mash-up of old and new hardware that gives it the look of an early 1900s drum while adding some modern touches. Tune it tight for a crisp, articulate voice, or back it off for something looser and grittier. Either way, this is a great little drum to have in your toolbox.

What's the story with this drum?

This drum was built as an experiment in combining some of my favorite vintage-inspired parts with a modern shell and construction. The 6-ply Maple/Gum/Maple Jasper-style shell is fitted with '50s Slingerland nickel over brass single-flanged hoops and brass clips, along with Kent replica single-point lugs machined from stainless steel.

I paired those vintage-inspired details with a modified George Way vintage-style throw-off, 16-strand unplated steel snare wires, and a few other modern touches. The bearing edges are cut at 30° with an outer round-over, then waxed and burnished.

The finish is a unique distressed Gold-n-Bronze, with a silver-finished interior. It's definitely not trying to look like a brand-new drum—and that's part of the fun.
