Workbench Series 14" x 6.5" Olivewood Snare - Prototype
This drum was built to be fat—from the dark tone of the Olivewood, to the 30° bearing edges, to the subtle damping of the wallpaper interior and the Powerstroke 4 batter head. Everything about this drum is built to dive deep.
What's the story with this drum? This drum was my first use of a shell from CVL of Italy. The wood is a beautiful book-matched Olivewood. This one took a few tests with the finish before I settled on a natural satin acrylic finish. I was also inspired by an SJC snare I saw with a wallpapered interior. I thought it was such a cool detail that I wanted to try my own version. I really like how it turned out, and I'll definitely use CVL shells again.
What makes this a "Prototype" drum?
The only real "flaw" is in the drilling. This was before I developed my current template and jig system, so I was still laying out and drilling the lug holes by hand—and a few of them ended up a bit off. It's a small detail, but it's part of what makes this one a Prototype.
This drum has also been sitting on the shelf for a while, and I managed to put a small nick in the finish under the batter hoop.

Every Workbench Series drum begins as just a collection of components. Each drum is carefully curated, by me, and built as a unique one-off instrument, every piece waiting to find the right partner, each with its own voice and character
— all combined into an instrument that is unexpected yet still familiar.
